Hearing Loss
Today over 30 million senior Americans (over the age of 60) and perhaps an equal number of Baby Boomers suffer from hearing loss. Hearing loss is one of the most common chronic health care problems facing older adults today. Recent studies have shown that up to 50% of the Baby Boomer population is experiencing significant hearing loss as much as 20 years earlier than previous generations.
Hearing loss can result from many different causes such as exposure to loud noise, an inherited condition, injury or infection and physical changes within the ear caused by aging. It usually develops slowly over many years, so you may not realize that your hearing has gotten worse.
Similar to age related vision loss due to cataracts, today there is no reason to miss out on any experiences both visual and hearing that can enhance your quality of life. Hearing can start to degrade beginning in our early 30’s. Today, it is recommended that the youth of America listen to music from portable devices no more than 45 minutes a day. Consider the rock n’ roll concerts, records and sounds we heard decades ago. It happens for everyone, the challenge is recognizing that there is a solution to hearing loss. With the advent of digital technology, the hearing aid technology has made significant advances in the past decade. What was once considered a true sign of aging due to bulk and inconvenience, hearing aids are now created in several shapes, sizes and configurations that best suit the patients needs. The first step though is recognizing the need, realizing that a loss of hearing at whatever level means you are missing out.
It is the intent of our medical practice to provide complimentary hearing evaluations for all our patients 65 and older so they can understand the affects of hearing loss and what options are available to hear what you may be missing.
